Ramu Maharajapuram, known as “SPB Ramu”, is a two-time Nandi Award-winning playback singer whose voice recalls the great S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. He has sung for films including Attarintiki Daredi and performed more than 2,000 concerts in India and abroad.

A voice audiences recognise

Ramu Maharajapuram grew up in Nellore, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam's home town, learning SPB's songs from cassettes. Audiences and the media know him as “SPB Ramu” because his voice so closely resembles SPB's.

His breakthrough came on SPB's ETV show Paadutha Theeyaga in 1996. Around 2000 he moved to Chennai, where he became a sought-after track singer for composers such as Bharadwaj, G. Anand and Vasu Rao, and by his own count sang 200–300 guide tracks for SPB himself. He twice won the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi TV Award for Best Male Playback Singer: for the serial Mano Yagnam (2001) and the title song of Thrisoolam (2007). He has released 280 albums and singles since 1998, sung for films including Attarintiki Daredi, Partner and Kasthuri Veedu, and performed more than 2,000 concerts in India, the USA and Canada.
